UK ‘fails to freeze’ Mubarak-era assets: Egyptian officials accuse the UK of hiding stolen wealth and breaching international anti-corruption accords. Egypt’s new Legal Affairs Minister Mohamed Mahsoub said: “The UK is one of the worst countries when it comes to tracing and freezing Egyptian assets.” Britain has allowed key members of Egypt’s toppled dictatorship to retain millions of pounds of suspected property and business assets in the UK, potentially violating a globally-agreed set of sanctions.

“After the immigrants, you’re next.” That’s what was written on flyers that appeared this week in the gay clubbing district of Athens. As violence against immigrants and ethnic minorities escalates across Greece, supporters of the ultra-right Golden Dawn party have also begun to promote hate attacks on homosexuals and people with disabilities.

Spanish ‘Robin Hood’: “This is the biggest rip-off in the history of capitalism,” said Gordillo. “The banks created huge amounts of private debt which went toxic. Now they are using public money, taken from the poor, to rescue them. That is what the cuts to health and education are about. “We want to show that this crisis has a human face. People are losing everything – their jobs, their homes, and some don’t even have enough to eat.” “The situation is critical and I think there is now a chance of change. The system cannot resolve people’s problems,” said Gordillo. Him and his marchers cross Andalucía, watched by wary police – Gordillo’s reputation as a modern-day Robin Hood has grown this summer after a series of “workers’ marches” across southern Andalucía saw followers raid food from two supermarkets and hand it to the poor. Flash occupations of bank branches and an empty luxury country hotel have kept his small Andalucian Workers’ Union in the headlines as debate rages about a style of direct action that attracts those seeking radical change to Spain’s current diet of soaring unemployment, recession and harsh austerity.

Smack of post-colonial arrogance in media-comments in Britain about Ecuador, after they give Asylum to Juilan Assange and its president! The arrogance bred into the British from an early age is possibly best summed up by Cecil Rhodes, the great coloniser of southern Africa: “Remember that you are an Englishman, and have consequently won first prize in the lottery of life.” But the British, in particular, have to do more than just demonstrate balance and evidence; after centuries of lording it over the world, they have to learn respect. Often, that will mean treating foreigners not just as equals but – as in the case of Correa, who has a PhD in economics, and whose commitment to poverty reduction is evidenced by his work with poor communities at a young age – considerably more.
